When the language you are learning shares vocabulary with languages you already know it becomes easier to get acquainted with the languages and it will allow you to expand your vocabulary at a faster rate.
Maltese is a Semitic language, this means it belongs to the same family as Arabic and Hebrew, whereas, Italian is a Romance language which developed from Latin. However, due to Malta's geographical location and its rich history the Maltese language has been greatly influenced by the languages with which it has come into contact. One of these is Italian, which has left an important imprint in Maltese vocabulary.
