What the words for the seasons tell us
- ▶ All of the Romance languages listed derive the words for spring and winter from the Latin prīma vēra and hībernum.
- ▶ For autumn, most terms derive from autumnus, except for Asturian, Aragonese, Catalan and Aranese, whose forms reflect influences from Latin sērōtina, Basque agorr and Latin tardātiō.
- ▶ The Iberian-Romance terms for summer fall into two main groups: those derived from the Vulgar Latin veranus and those derived from Latin aestīvum.
